The award structure is a component of the ‘Safer Public Pools’ Code of Practice developed by the Victorian Government and LSV, following Coronial recommendations. WSAC Facilities Manager, Kieran O’Dwyer, said this prestigious award reflects his team’s collective commitment to student safety. “Safety is the highest priority at Westbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre for all of our staff, not only centre management, but every individual and this endorsement is a great representation of our team.”
Kieran is an advocate for industry best practice and benchmarking initiatives such as these. “The safety standards upheld by an aquatic facility have real consequences. Independent assessments enable facilities to look beyond their commercial interests to ensure the safety of their students, staff and families. It also encourages facilities to invest in the training and educational needs of staff, which is central to the WSAC approach.”
Kieran says the LSV Gold Endorsement provides a level of reassurance to swimmers and their families, but for the centre, it is business as usual. “It’s not an endpoint but a reminder to remain vigilant and continue to look for ways to improve. As an industry, we must make every effort to improve the safety of water sports for everyone.”
